Company Technical Strategy Questions

Assessment of a candidate's understanding of the organization's technical direction and how engineering aligns with overall business strategy. This includes knowledge of the technology roadmap, cloud and infrastructure strategy, modernization plans, platform and product priorities, competitive and market positioning, and the team level investments that matter for the near term and long term such as two to three year horizons. Candidates may be evaluated on their ability to analyze tradeoffs between technical options, prioritize engineering work to match business goals, identify risks and technical debt, recommend pragmatic migration or modernization approaches, and communicate how technical choices enable product and market objectives. The topic also covers understanding organizational context including where the team sits in the company, stakeholders and dependencies, and implications for hiring, tooling, and operational practices.

Explain how you would define and communicate two-to-three year investments for a data engineering team. Describe how you'd split near-term wins versus strategic projects, how you'd estimate resource needs, and what artifacts or presentations you'd prepare to secure stakeholder buy-in and budget.

Leadership asks you to choose sequencing for three competing initiatives: 1) real-time analytics, 2) migration to a lakehouse, 3) building an internal data marketplace. You can fully fund only one this year. Provide a prioritized recommendation over a 3-year horizon, include assumptions, metrics to validate each initiative, dependencies, and mitigation plans for deprioritized efforts.

You need to migrate 10 PB of historical data and live ETL from a legacy on-prem Hadoop cluster to a cloud lakehouse (S3 + Delta Lake) with minimal downtime and no data loss. Prepare a detailed migration strategy: initial bulk transfer approach, live-sync strategy (CDC), validation checks, cutover plan, incremental testing phases, cost estimate, and mitigation for unexpected data drift or format incompatibilities.

Management asks you to explain 'technical debt' in the context of data pipelines and propose a practical process to measure and prioritize it by business impact. Provide example metrics you would collect, a simple scoring model (e.g., impact×severity/effort), and an example prioritization of three hypothetical debt items.
